Register early if you want a convenient test center
Students should not wait too long to register, especially for the August SAT. In many areas, popular test centers can fill up quickly. Registering early gives students the best chance of getting a nearby location and avoiding a long commute on test day.
This is especially important for international students, students in high-demand areas, and students who need a specific test center for logistical reasons.
Which SAT date should students choose?
For rising seniors applying Early Action or Early Decision, you’ll want to book the August, September, or October SAT dates. These dates leave time for scores to return before many early application deadlines.
For rising juniors, the best date depends on preparation level. Students who have already built strong skills may be ready for August or September. Students who need more time may be better served by aiming for October, November, December, or spring. The key is to choose a date that gives enough time for meaningful preparation, not just last-minute review.
Don’t just register, make a plan
Once the test date is selected, students should build a realistic study schedule. A strong SAT plan should include:
- regular full-length practice tests
- careful review of mistakes
- targeted practice by question type
- vocabulary and grammar review
- timing and section strategy
The average student needs about 2–3 months of consistent preparation to make meaningful progress, especially if the goal is a major score increase. That means students planning for August or September should begin now, not a few weeks before the test, for the best success.
